Announcing Soho Rep’s 2023/24 Season

Dear Friends,

We are so happy to share Soho Rep’s new season with you! It’s also the final season programmed by our beloved outgoing artistic leaders, Meropi Peponides and Sarah Benson.

One way that Sarah and Meropi sometimes described their curatorial practice was to say that they were always looking for “artists who are risking something of themselves.” The incredible theatermakers that you will see at Soho Rep this year are certainly all pushing their creative work into wild new territories – formally, personally, and thematically!

In October, Soho Rep and our friends at The Bushwick Starr invite you to join us for the World Premiere of Snatch Adams & Tainty McCracken Present It’s That Time of the Month, a hilarious queer spectacle, written and performed by Becca Blackwell and Amanda Duarte, directed by Jess Barbagallo, and featuring immersive production design by Greg Corbino.

Next, we are ecstatic that Public Obscenities is transferring to two theaters across the country! It will run at Woolly Mammoth in Washington D.C. starting in November before it returns to New York City at Theatre for a New Audience in January. We are so glad tens of thousands more audience members will have the chance to experience Shayok Misha Chowdhury’s incredible bilingual play, written in Bangla and English, about the things we see, the things we miss, and the things that turn us on.

In May, the season will conclude with the World Premiere of The Fires, a new play written and directed by Raja Feather Kelly, which was also commissioned by Soho Rep. This stunning play about being a somebody in a world of other somebodies trying on love, is set in a South Brooklyn apartment in 1971, 1998, and 2021 and will feature an extraordinary company of eight actors.

The year will also include Writer Director Lab presentations! From September 15 – 30, Nkenna Akunna & Nana Dakin, Ran Xia & Risa Puno, and Carolina Đỗ & Annie Jin Wang will share in-process showings of their inventive new works, which were developed in the Lab over the past year with Lab Co-Chairs William Burke and Jackie Sibblies Drury.

You can reserve your tickets for Snatch Adams… and The Fires here! All Writer Director Lab presentations and tickets for Public Obscenities return run at TFANA will go on sale this fall. If you’re excited about the season, and have the means to do so, we also hope you’ll consider giving a gift to Soho Rep. As a 65-seat theater with affordable tickets, 90% of our income comes from donations from folks like you, so your support is essential to making this season happen!

We look forward to seeing you at the theater! We will also be announcing two artistic leaders of Soho Rep shortly. We know they are just as excited to dive into this incredible year with all of you as we are!

Love,

Soho Rep
